Water-based woodblock printmaking - Mokuhanga - 3 day Workshop with Lucy May Schofield.

  • Coombe Farm Studios (map)

During this intensive workshop, you will be introduced to the traditional Japanese art of water-based wood block printmaking. Mokuhanga is perfect for anyone interested in a non-toxic, water-based, table-top printmaking technique. Though the techniques used are complex, the medium offers benefits in slowing down and paying attention to the nuance of touch and sensitivity required to gauge depth, dampness and pressure. Over the course of the workshop, you will learn the skills to transfer a simple image to Japanese plywood, carve some colour separation blocks in relief and print on mulberry paper with watercolours and rice glue, following in the tradition of Japanese Ukiyo-e printmaking.

With no mechanical press required, only a hand held ‘baren’, you will learn the techniques to achieve various print effects, from ‘goma zuri’ (sesame printing) to ‘bokashi’ (gradation printing), while registering your multi- block image through the simple but brilliant traditional ‘kento’ registration system.

You will be sure to fall in love with both the process and results of this intricate, accessible, mediative, water- based printmaking method which provides endless possibilities.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU / REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS COUSRE

Please bring a VERY simple image sketched out no bigger than 140 mm x 200 mm (14cm x 20cm - just short of A5 size) with you. The image should have a maximum of 3 colours and be simple in form as we will be carving our blocks with the traditional Hangi-toh knife which cuts towards us, rather than carved away from us, through the wood. This is often a. new way of using a tool to many people so it’s advisable to keep images super simple in order to the learn the techniques and carving and printing and maximise our time together.

Please also ask students to bring any glasses needed for close work and their own cutting tools and watercolour tubes if they’d prefer to use them, however everything needed for the course will be provided so please don’t worry if you don’t have these items.
